Wendy Corsi Staub Hanging with Readers and Authors

With me from left to right: Jon Land, Robert Liparulo, R.L. Stine

Thrillerfest--and conferences like it--are a rare, welcome opportunity for those of us in the lonely business of writing. As I frequently tell my readers (and reporters) who ask what my least favorite pa… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Abe Lincoln, Mrs. Pizzolanti, and Me

People always ask me when I started writing. I’ve told this tale many, many times. But for those of you who haven’t heard it, or don't mind hearing it again: When I was in third grade, I received my first writing assignment. It came from my beloved teacher, Mrs. Pizzolanti,… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Summertime...and the living's not easy

I’m probably in the minority, but lately, I’m not a big “summer” person. Not that I don’t enjoy sunshine and blue skies, backyard barbecues, swimming laps at the pool, lounging on the beach with a good book. But those aren’t things I (or most people) get to do on a daily ba… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) The Party

Surprise, surprise. As busy as Wendy always is, she somehow pulled off the event of a lifetime without me knowing or suspecting anything. My milestone birthday, as Wendy calls it, is right around the corner and last Friday night we were going out to dinner with our neighbors to celebrate. As fate would have it, our neighbor has the exact same birthday as me. The story we were told was that we had to make a quick stop at a charity event before proceeding to the restaurant when BAM, SURPRISE! An e… Continue

Monroe Phone calls

When Vincent Martin was in Afghanistan (3/06 to 5/07), from time to time, while out on a mountain top, he would get hold of a satellite phone and call us.

There is a delay on a satellite line of about a seven count so it was always difficult to really say anything but just hearing his voice was such a comfort.

During the August of 2006 there was a lot of Taleban activity in the Hindu Kush with constant casualties. Early in this period, Vincent had called via satellite to tell us…

Monroe Snookered!

No adolescent girls in peril? Well, here's where assuming too much gets me! I have finished the first two books in the Lily Dale series and despite my lightweight status, I can't wait for book 3. I survived the first two by concentrating on "craft" whenever I got to an "Oh, No! Don't open that door!" moment. This can be a dangerous move for me because I am the nit-picking details nerd that ruins historical movies for my children by saying things like, "No one in the 1890s would have used a wo… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Month of Roses

Back when I found out that my brother, Rick, and my sister-in-law, Mari, were expecting a new baby this month, I promised them that I would fly in to be there for the baby’s birth. We’d know the date in advance, as it would be a scheduled C-section. I particularly wanted t… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Superhero Cleaning Lady, Save Me!

Is it just me, or do you, too, feel like you could spend every minute of every day organizing clutter and cleaning, and you would still be surrounded by junk mail packets, you still wouldn’t be able to find your favorite sunglasses, and you would still walk barefoot across the carpet and step on a stray Cocoa Puff? Maybe it’s just me. I have this fantasy. In it, I stumble upon a huge windfall and I hire this Superhero Cleaning Lady I once read about. She’s like the queen of clean, costs a fort… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) The News Blackout

I know all of you fans of The Inside Story have been clamoring for a new post for some time now (ok, maybe not all, maybe not even some, but at least one). Unfortunately there hasn't been alot of news to report about life with Wendy because lately there hasn't been any life with Wendy. Why? She is back to writing! After all the travel and events and signings she is finally up in office for about 12-14 hours a day working on her next book. Its nice and quiet around here, school is finishing up fo… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Inter-NOT

When our home computer network went down over the weekend, it occurred to me that not only is my whole career enveloped in the hard drives, but also our photos, correspondence, favorite recipes, finances...you name it, I’ve got it saved somewhere on a computer. Scary. Yes, I’ve got most of it backed up, piecemeal, in various places and could probably find it in a pinch–the important stuff, anyway. A handful of the photos, documents and emails are even printed out and filed away in a semi-organi… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) Ups and Downs

Everyone knows life is full of ups and downs, peaks and valleys, good days and bad. This weekend was no different except that the ups and downs all happened in the same day. For example, my younger son has been struggling in Little League this year with his hitting, he just won't swing the bat. He says he is scared to swing because he was hit in the head by a pitch last season. He wasn't hurt of course and if you know him and his head, you'll know the ball was in more jeopardy than his brain. An… Continue

John "Bachelor Boy" And His Women

After viewing my photos from the weekend, Wendy asked me to blog about my experience of being serenaded onstage by Gloria Estefan. Little did either of us know that the story would continue in Canada, where I came face-to-face with Gloria (again!) after the show... The following are two excerpts from my LiveJournal. * * * Yesterday, I had the good fortune of being able to "upgrade" my seats for tonight's show from row N to row A in the orchestra. (As in front row, baby!) So, with some encoura… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) The Truth Is Revealed

Who would've thought Wendy would tell everyone about the stress induced pains she has been having? As she wrote in her "chill" blog, she thinks she is a superwoman and can do anything...like be in two places at once, deliver manuscripts on time under impossible deadlines, write commencement addresses and conference speeches, conduct events and programs, handle everything that keeps coming at her without any ill effects. As we all know, it doesn't work that way and something had to give. Hopefull… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Chill (cringe)

This long Memorial Day weekend was the first "real" weekend (or even the first stretch of several days) that I have spent at home since the beginning of March. I mean other than May 9-11, when I had a local reading/signing to do, a book revision and commencement speech to work on, and a friend died suddenly the day before the third anniversary of my mom's passing on Mother's Day--not exactly an easy-breezy weekend. No wonder I’m behind on everything around here! I've never been one to “chill” (… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Raindrops Are Falling On My Head...and My Face...and My Cute New Shoes...

This morning I woke up to find myself in the New York Times! No, not on the bestseller list–DYING BREATH won’t appear there until the June 1st edition, because the lists are released to the publishers a few weeks in advance. Here’s the link to a great article by Gregor… Continue

Monroe Lily Dale

Ok, I have to come out. I just can't read thrillers any more—especially ones with adolescent girls in peril (put that to the nth for girls named Tess). Fortunately, I am still young at heart and have no trouble curling up with adolescent lit. I just started reading Lily Dale: Awakenings and I am so so enjoying it. Of course I love all the plant references and I think the way you jump in and out of Calla's head is really effective. I was worried at first because that can be hard to pull o… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) The New York Times

Okay, okay, I know I have derelict in my reporting duties so I apologize to one and all. Now, that we've cleared that up, this is exactly what happened tonight at 5:33pm. I had brought our younger son to baseball practice and waited because it was supposed to rain again and I figured I'd just grab him from there instead of going home and coming back. My phone rang and Wendy told me her editor just called to let her know that yes, even though making the New York Times bestseller list criteria had… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Still Careening Along...

I’m so sorry I’ve fallen behind on my blog! I’ve been on the road and, in between, trying to pick up the pieces and play catch up here at home. I’ve come down with some kind of bug, unfortunately–despite my religious use of anti-bacterial handwipes–but I guess that’s not a surprise, with all the traveling I’ve been doing. I’ll hit the road again the day after tomorrow so am trying to recover in record time, dosing myself with Emergen-C, which if you’ve never heard of it, I highly recommend! It’s… Continue

Louise HI Wendy

I was thinking about you yesterday. I hope you had a great weekend with your family. Sunday ended up being better than I thought it would be.....my little cousin sent me her class project to take "Flat Stanley" on an adventure. He's a character from a children's book who gets flattened. He loves to travel so his family folds him up in an envelope and sends him places. My hubby and I took Flat Stanley to DC and took his picture by the monuments, the Capital, Library of Congress, Smithsonian, Geor… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) Another Bestseller!

Congratulations are now in order as Wendy's new suspense, Dying Breath, has debuted at number 100 of USA Today's bestsellers. Keep in mind that the USA Today list includes all books, hardcovers, fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks and bibles currently for sale. As a matter of fact, Wendy follows the classic J.D. Salinger novel, Catcher in the Rye at 99. Quite an achievement! Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Atlanta

Writing this from a hotel room high above the city with a great view of the skyline, while gobbling down takeout sushi for breakfast/lunch. I know I promised to blog on Mondays and Wednesdays but I have been traveling too much to stick to a schedule...sorry! Things should settle down soon! I wanted to thank the Book Nook staff for a wonderful event, and thank my loyal readers--new and old--who endured an hours-long wait to say hello and get their books signed. Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) Today's the USA Today

This morning we woke to find Wendy gone again, on her way to a conference in Atlanta. We barely had time to hear about what a great time she had at her book party at the Book Nook, but we know that there was a great turnout so thanks to everyone who attended. Today's big story is the nice big advertisement for Dying Breath in USA Today - look on the Books page in the Life section - so thanks to the publisher Kensington for that. Update on my dad. Wendy Corsi Staub Quick Dad Update

Our phone rang off the hook last night, and I've gotten a lot of email from people wondering and worrying about Mark's Dad. Thank you; we were touched by all the kind concern. He came through the surgery and as of late last night when Mark got home, he was still pretty much out, due to all the anesthesia. Mark will update later. Wendy Corsi Staub Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Question of the day: is it bad when a husband and wife rely on each other’s blogs to know what’s up in their daily lives? Last night, I didn’t get home till almost 11:30; Mark was up before 5 a.m. and left for the hospital while I was in the shower. Other than a few quick exchanges w… Continue

Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) Bullet Points

I was going to wait a day or two before my next entry after yesterday's bumper cars and other assorted nuttiness but I just have to tell you what is happening today. Wendy is in NYC to sign store copies of her two books released today. As you know by know, she always brings a little something to show her appreciation to all the booksellers she visits. Wendy Corsi Staub It's Here!

Today's the day! I got some sleep, I've had my coffee, checked my email, and--most fittingly, woke up to find that the rain had ended overnight. It's still dark out but the birds are singing just outside my window as I type this. It's got to be a great day, right?! (Sometime, Mark or I will tell you about the birds--it's one of our things.) Wendy Corsi Staub The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

For months now, I’ve been anxious for April 29 to arrive...and tonight, with two hours to go of this day, I can hardly wait. But not merely because I have two books, DYING BREATH and LILY DALE: BELIEVING, being released tomorrow. Right now, the main reason I can’t wait till tomorrow is...this has been one of the WORST DAYS EVER!!!! OMG! Will it never end? As you know if you read Mark’s blog, the day began with a bang. Mark Staub The Inside Story...Oh no! (continued) Its Not Just Wendy

Okay, I've been going on and on about how crazy it is around here, how watching Wendy move through her whirlwind days of too much to cram into too little time, of the papers continually flying around her head, of things dropping and falling. Yeah, I've sure had alot of fun poking fun at her. Well, let me tell ya, its not just Wendy. Why? Today I smashed up both our cars at the same time on our driveway. Oh yes. Both. Wendy Corsi Staub Well, it IS titillating...

Every author, upon the release of a new novel, holds her breath waiting for the first reviews to come in. Oh, some authors might tell you they don’t care what reviewers say, but I don’t buy it. Come on. Who isn’t hoping to be loved and lauded? Who doesn’t want--and maybe even need--that? :::::::::waving hand:::::::::::: Me! I do! I enjoy being loved and lauded. Wendy Corsi Staub SPAM-A-LOT...AND SPAM-A-LITTLE

So you know how you rarely bother to check your spam folder because it’s usually filled with lottery winning notices, links to photos of buxom, lonely women with names like Candy and Kitten, and oddly awkwardly formal letters from wealthy Nigerian gentlemen who want you to help them with a teensy bank deposit problem and for your efforts, they will give you many millions of dollars? Right. Tonight, I decided to empty my spam folder and along with all of the above, just before doing a mass dele… Continue

Because of all Wendy's travel lately, she has to catch up on all the writing time that she has missed and we are home all week. Wendy Corsi Staub Tivo and Me: A Love Story

I travel quite a bit–lately, a few times a week–and of course, I miss my husband and kids like crazy when I’m away. I also miss my coffee, as we’ve previously established. Third of all, as much as I appreciate a great hotel bed (Marriot’s my favorite), I really, really, REALLY miss spending my nights at home. My husband and I have a great marriage. Wendy Corsi Staub Home, Sweet (Busy, Cluttered, Chaotic) Home!

I got back from Pittsburgh late Saturday night, landing early at JFK--what is up with Jet Blue? They're usually on time, but these last two flights were unbelievably uneventful and ahead-of-time. Can't beat that! Jet Blue, I will be flying you three more times in the next few weeks, please keep up the great work! (NOTE TO DELTA: I'm flying you, too, next week...I know you just merged with Northwest; please, no delays!) When I got in Saturday night the pope was here, doing a mass in Yonkers, whi… Continue

As we wait for Wendy to arrive home tonight with that big new statue and tell us how she managed to get it on a plane, I have to say there has not been a heck of a lot going on around here. As my coffee is brewing and one son is getting dressed for baseball practice, I can report that the boys are now officially on Spring Break and I'll have to figure out a way to keep them entertained and off the walls and ceilings, our former backyard lawn has now morphed into the "bog that wouldn't leave" as… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub More from Pittsburgh

Back home, I get up sometime between 4:30 and 5:30 every morning and the first thing I do is make a big pot of coffee...then proceed to drink most of it as I get busy in my office. It’s trickier in hotels–they often make you wait until 6 a.m. until coffee is available, and God knows I can’t work–or think or function–until I’m sufficiently caffeinated! So yesterday, I was basically pacing until I got my pot of room service coffee delivered at the first available moment–6 a.m.–and then I could fin… Continue

Wendy Corsi Staub Hello from Pittsburgh

I had the best flight ever this morning from JFK on Jet Blue–the sun was shining on NYC, we boarded early, I got a front row all to myself, got to work on the plane, landed early, and the sun was shining in Pittsburgh, too. Don’t you love when that happens when you fly? What? It never does? Actually, that never happens to me, either...and let me tell you, it was great. Well, last week just before Wendy was to leave to fly to Detroit to visit the Borders people in Ann Arbor, she thought she should bake chocolate chip cookies for everyone there and put them into neat little bags with promotional messages. Monday, April 14 I’m writing this from a Northwest Airlines flight somewhere over Ohio, from what I can see out the window. My publisher sent me to Ann Arbor to Borders corporate headquarters to meet with the buyers and district managers. What a pleasure it was to come face to face with these terrific people who do so much to support my books! Wendy Corsi Staub And we're off!

Today we (virtually) threw open the doors and welcomed our first few members to the site for a test run. Kind of like when I invited a couple of pals to come early to a party we were having and sample my pumpkin martini concoction until I got the recipe just right. It took a few batches, and I didn't ask them for written feedback...which is probably a very good thing. I'll assume the pre-emptive visitors to this site are just as agreeable to being guinea pigs and considerably more coherent than… Continue
